How to Build a CAPTCHA Solver

captcha

I’ve thought about this quite a bit and actually done some research into it.

I’m pretty certain that the method I’m going to describe would work on a significantly large portion of the CAPTCHA’s out there.

For the uninitated, a CAPTCHA stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”.

If you look at the CAPTCHA’s that are out there, you’ll notice one similarity almost without exception.

Before you notice the similarity, however, you’ll need to convert the image to black and white.

Why would you want to do this?

Well, once the image is converted to black and white, the numbers and letters will be darker.

As a result, it’s rather trivial to take it and run it through OCR software to solve the CAPTCHA.

Hopefully, some enterprising hacker out there will write an open source CAPTCHA solver with this information.

Not that I would use it to spam - oh no - not me - the horror!

P.S. Eventually we’ll probably move to picture identification for CAPTCHA’s.

Open source captcha breaker? Well here you go: http://churchturing.org/captcha-dist/ GPL 3 Captcha breaker, breaks Digg, PHPBB, Rogers, Ebaums, etc. Written in OCaml such that uptake will all but nil.
